Frontera Fund Helps DACA

The Statue of Liberty verses about bring me your tired, poor, and huddled masses … is in jeopardy of having no meaning in the United States of America. In July 2017 the Trump administration announced a probable end of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals).

The GOP and the current administration is designing a change to its rules initially passed by President Obama. Under the Obama Administration DACA allowed undocumented kids that later in life met certain requirements, to become entitled to a reprieve from deportation, a social security number, a driver’s license, to apply for tuition fees, and the opportunity to work in the U.S. for two years with the ability to apply for renewals.

The Texas Attorney General and other AGs from Republican states submitted a letter to the present administration requesting that the DACA program be rescinded and instead institute a “phase out” period. The DACA expiration date is in 6 months.

Members of the Hispanic Caucus and other organizations like the Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund are feeling very uncertain for the 800,000 immigrants who are called the DREAMers. The Frontera Fund is fighting to find a better solution, like the Frontera Fund’s ‘A DREAM Act legislation to fight efforts to get rid of DACA.

There are about 200,000 DREAMers from Mexico, Central and South America living in California; 115,000 living in Texas and more than 300,000 living in New York and others living in Florida and Illinois.

The DACA program has been in existence for five years and its statistics show benefits that involves the majority of DACA immigrants are working and attending school. Their earnings pays taxes and are contributing to the economy by purchasing homes, vehicles, and have created viable businesses.

The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund is an Arizona advocate organization begun by journalists Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey. Their passion to help the underserved and immigrants of Arizona have had them attacked, arrested, and incarcerated.

One such invasion and arrest involved the Sheriff of Maricopa County who broke into their home and took all their personal paper work. Larkin and Lacey sued the Maricopa County officials and was awarded millions of dollars which was used to start the Frontera Fund.

Sentient AI – A/B Testing

Ever since the world was introduced to computers, we’ve seen them explode in popularity and usage. From e-commerce to social media, from gaming to scientific endeavors, computers and the Internet dominate every environment they’re placed in. One of the more recent factors that make computers so prevalent in the world today is their ability to run AI with a hope that soon we will one day be able to reach Sentient AI.

AI stands for “artificial intelligence”, and is defined as the idea of a computer taking in a lot of information, then analyzing that information in a similar way that a human might analyze it, but much quicker, and able to make decisions much more efficiently. If the AI processes information close enough to how a human processes information (as well as makes few if any errors) the AI can be said to be Sentient AI.

Sentient AI, once made practical, will create huge improvements for businesses, scientific advancements, and most likely every person on the planet by providing highly accurate, rapidly generated information. One area where businesses will see improvements is A/B Testing. A/B Testing is the process of sending different versions of the same information to different people and tracking which version was more popular, usually using a metric of how many users clicked on a link in the content. Traditionally, the two versions you send will be the current content (such as the current home page to a website) and a potential upgrade or test version. If the upgrade version leads to more user engagement than the current version is replaced with the upgrade version, and a new upgrade version begins production.

Sentient AI could be used in ways to dramatically alter the concept of A/B Testing. Instead of a user manually creating two versions, a Sentient AI could create dozens to hundreds, perhaps even thousands of versions and track which options are the most successful. Going further, such technologies could target different versions for different demographics, while still learning and upgrading itself.

As you can see, Sentient AI has a lot of potential if the technologies come to fruition. Anyone needing to analyze vast amounts of information quickly, or find themselves in a situation were they need to constantly improve their message or product, should look into the development and availability of these systems.

Keep an updated guest list as well as check list for supplies and food that will be necessary for the event. In addition to this it would be helpful to list any dietary concerns or allergies to ensure everyone has a safe and fun time. Once the lists are made the planner can really have some fun with the details. If alcohol will be served there are many options to cut back on hiring a bartender. If there is a theme to the party it may be able to be incorporated into the fun color pages to add a bit more detail to the party. Whatever type of event a person is planning, as long as they stay organized they will be sure to provide guests with a wonderful experience.

How Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Corruption Led to the Frontera Fund

For decades, Arizona’s Sheriff Joe Arpaio was known as “America’s Toughest Sheriff” for his tough crackdowns on alleged criminals, but he was also known for widespread corruption and civil rights abuses. Though most news media looked at him as a beloved and colorful character, one newspaper was unceasing in its determination to expose Arpaio’s misdeeds: the Phoenix New Times. The newspaper published a series of articles on widespread mismanagement, financial corruption, and the abuse of power conducted by Joe Arpaio’s department. The newspaper was also unrelenting in its coverage of how Joe Arpaio and his deputies racially profiled and harassed Hispanics and illegal immigrants.

Mike Lacey and Jim Larkin, co-founders of the Phoenix New Times, wrote a 2007 cover story about how the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office had issued grand jury subpoenas to try to get sweeping information about the newspaper, including the writers, editors, readers, and even the IP addresses and the browsing history of visitors to the newspaper’s website. On October 18, 2007, Maricopa County Sheriff’s deputies dragged Lacey and Larkin out of their homes and arrested them, allegedly for exposing details about a grand jury investigation.

After a national outcry, Lacey and Larkin were released within 24 hours and responded with a lawsuit against Maricopa County. In 2012, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals found in favor of the two journalists, saying that the grand jury subpoenas were invalid because they were not approved by any grand jury. The appeals court also wrote: “It is hard to conceive of a more direct assault on the First Amendment than public officials ordering the immediate arrests of their critics. And, in this case, there was nothing subtle about their efforts to stifle the New Times.”

In 2013, Maricopa County was forced to pay a $3.7 million settlement to Lacey and Larkin who decided to use the settlement money for the Frontera Fund. The Frontera Fund is unique in that it distributes funds to nonprofit groups that protect Hispanic civil rights and causes, along with defending freedom of speech for all citizens. In 2014, the fund provided funding for groups fighting against the anti-immigrant movements of Arizona politicians and continues to speak out on vital issues.
